Lincolnshire Plum Loaf

The Lincolnshire Plum Loaf is perhaps the most famous of all English tea loaves. This moist, succulent fruit loaf is equally as delicious served with butter, cheese or toasted. If you’ve never tried it, you’re missing a treat!

First made by the Myers family (see below), their original Plum Loaf is not only a firm favourite with the Royal Family, it is also served in First Class on all British Airways long haul flights out of Heathrow.

History of the Lincolnshire Plum Loaf

It was first made in 1901 by Charles Myers in the small market town of Alford in Lincolnshire.

Charles had moved to Lincolnshire that year after buying the Alford Mill and Store (the Alford Mill was a six-sailed windmill dismantled in 1973. It is not the same as the five-sailed Alford Windmill that still operates today).

This newly created tea loaf proved to be a huge success with the people of Alford and Lincolnshire’s Plum Loaf was born.

Several generations later, the loaf is still made by the Myers family. Their thriving bakery is now in Horncastle and even has its own tea shop attached. Visitors can enjoy their scrumptious Plum Loaf fresh from the oven!

The Lincolnshire Plum Loaf Today

Unlike the Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese, which is made by just one producer, the Plum Loaf is now made by several Lincolnshire bakers, each with their own unique twist on the original recipe.
