Top Tips for Lincoln’s Christmas Market

Here is our short guide of top tips to help make your trip to Lincoln Christmas Market successful.

1. Wear comfortable footwear

Lincoln Christmas Market covers a large area and you’ll be doing a lot of walking, some of it on cobbled streets. Do make sure that you have something comfy on your feet!

If you need to have a rest, there are seating areas at the Xmas Market’s Food Courts on Westgate. There are also plenty of great cafes, pubs, restaurants and hotels on Bailgate and Steep Hill, where you can have a bite to eat and recharge your batteries.

2. Wear warm clothes

Much of Lincoln Christmas Market is outdoors, so wear warm clothes, preferably in layers. Typical daily temperatures at the Xmas Market are approximately 5-6 degrees celsius, with the temperature dropping considerably at night.

Don’t worry if you haven’t worn the right clothing – there are plenty of stalls at the market selling warm jackets, jumpers, scarves and gloves.

3. Bring waterproof clothing

Lincoln Christmas Market gets very busy and it’s much easier to wear waterproofs than struggle with an umbrella.

If you’re reading this article whilst at the market and in need of some waterproofs, then make your way to the Pitlochry shop at 12 Bailgate (just 30 seconds from Castle Square). Lincoln High Street (at the bottom of Steep Hill), is an approximately 10-15 minute walk away, and has a number of shops selling a wide range of outdoor clothing.

4. Keep your valuables safe

Although Lincoln is one of the safest cities in the UK, it’s a sad fact of modern life that where there are crowds of people, there may well be pickpockets.

Keep your wallets and mobile phones in inside pockets, and wear handbags across the shoulder.

5. Get your children to wear a wristband

A council-operated wristband scheme runs during the Lincoln Christmas Market. Simply write your mobile phone number on the back of the wristband and put it on your child. If you do become separated from your child, a Lincoln Christmas Market Steward will telephone you.

Free wristbands are available from: Park & Ride stations, the Tourist Information Centre in Castle Square and from Stewards at all entrances to the market.

6. Only Guide Dogs are allowed into Lincoln Christmas Market

Lincoln City Council operates a strict “no pets allowed into the Lincoln Christmas Market – apart from Guide Dogs” policy.

7. Use the Park & Ride.

If you plan to come to the Xmas Market by car, road closures mean that the closest you’ll be able to park is at Lindum Sports Club – around a ten minute walk from the market.  If not, a very efficient Park & Ride is operated from the Lincolnshire Showground to the Christmas Market. Buses run every seven minutes/when the bus is full – whichever is the quickest.
